Every fall in the high country of Colorado the Elk begin their breeding season. which is also know as the “Rut”. Just prior to this period the Bull Elk will have lost all of the velvet off of their antlers in preparation of the coming combat. The Bulls will stake out an area in the high alpine meadows and try to amass as many females as possible while at the same time using their high pitched calls, squeals and grunts to respond to, or challenge, any other males in the area to combat to see who has dominance. These eerie calls can be heard for long distances echoing in the higher elevations of the mountains. The Bull that I’ve painted, is in a high meadow, calling out to a distant challenger…
