The young, fledgling Fish Hawk, or Osprey, that I’ve depicted in “I’m Only Bluffing” is doing just that….bluffing. When young raptors like the Osprey are approached while in the nest, they will hiss, screech, spread their wings, fluff their feathers to make themselves appear as large as possible to whatever threat is approaching. Without the ability to fly unfortunately this is their only form of defense…Also, like some other raptors, young Osprey eyes differ in color from when they’re adults in the Osprey’s case when young they have reddish colored eyes, that turn bright yellow as they get older. By contrast the Northern Goshawk has yellow eyes at birth that turn ruby red when they mature
