The Greater Scaup (Aythya marila)

The Greater Scaup, or as it’s more readily known…”Bluebill” a nickname which is indicative of the bright blue bill found on the drake, or male duck. The drake, Greater Scaup are larger and have more rounded heads than females and as depicted in the painting have a bright blue bill and yellow eyes, dark head with a glossy green tint, white undersides and wings with white on the tips. On the other hand, the females are mostly brown, with white bands located on their wingtips, with a blue bill that is slightly duller than that of the male. Scaup are generally found along the coasts of North America sometimes floating off shore in very large flocks called “rafts”….in the instance of my painting a solitary Bluebill, covered with water droplets, has just popped to the surface after diving for mollusks or insects and is now paddling off in search of another diving spot…
