Order No Feathers Just Yet

This young Indian, most likely from a northern plains tribe such as the Mandan, or Arikara, has already started to modestly display some distinctive Indian handiwork and finery. Ever indicative of his youthful stature, he’s dressed out in his finest for whatever occasion might be at hand… proudly bedecked in colorful beads, beaded tunic, leggings, moccasins along with a fair amount of ermine pelts, he certainly has a good start of, at least, attempting to be impressive.

As he gets older and the personal triumphs and exploits recounting his bravery and courage become folk lore that’s heralded around the evening campfires, his tattered straw hat will eventually be replaced with headdress feathers of the golden and bald eagles. Iconic symbols of rank which are only found on great chiefs and courageous braves as indications of their wisdom, victories and esteem.

So, for now, this little Indian’s pouting is merely inconsequential, because for him there will be…. “No Feathers, Just Yet”.
